February 20 2012
The University of St Andrews has agreed to fund £400k of detailed design work into a full refurbishment of their 1970s student union. In addition to a much needed revamp of the existing structure this would entail creation of a new ‘piazza’ and entrance on the existing car park along with a new street facing café.
Updated facilities would be made available within including a flexible performance space and nightclub alongside a radio broadcasting unit and cocktail bar.
University Proctor, Professor Lorna Milne, said: “The Students’ Association building hasn’t changed much since I was a student and I’m excited by the possibility of long awaited and innovative improvements.
“The Union should be a central part of the St Andrews experience and should match the high standards we achieve in so many other areas of university life.”
Subject to approval and funding availability work on the £12m scheme is expected to commence in 2013.
