Smailholm Tower in line for turf roof

Smailholm Tower, a 15th century tower house in the Borders, could be given a new roof after Historic Scotland announced plans to make the structure watertight via installation of a turf roof.Rainwater ingress through the existing stone flags has been causing damage to the upper levels but trials have suggested that turf and clay soft capping could address the problem.
