Leith steps up a gear
July 22 2009
Smith Scott Mullan Associates are riding to the forefront of an ongoing cycle of improvements in the Leith district of Edinburgh by proposing transformation of a redundant railway line spanning Leith Walk into a cycleway. The new route would grant urban peddlers lofty vehicle free passage from Pilrig Park to Leith Links, a key link in the chain of a wider bicycling network.
Resting on the in-situ sandstone pillars of the old bridge a simple horizontal platform would provide a lofty eyrie for environmentally aware travellers to sail past the congested chaos of Leith Walk below.
Smith Scott Mullan Director Alistair Scott explains: “One of the key objectives will be to expand and join up the existing “fast route” network of cycle paths on old railway lines. Other cities such as Paris and New York already have elevated cycle ways and our idea is to achieve this by creating a new lightweight bridge on the location of the old railway bridge across Leith Walk."
