Govan plan
July 15 2009
Govan has scooped a £939,000 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund through its Townscape Heritage Initiative, adding to a five year, £5.3m fund being put together for the area by Glasgow City Council, Historic Scotland and others. The money will be put toward the repair and reuse of historic buildings in the parish, which has a history stretching back to the 5th century and was once the centre of Clyde shipbuilding.
Amongst the beneficiaries of this largesse will be the Pearce Institute which will be repaired and Govan Cross which will benefit from public realm works, including shopfront renewal and restoration of the Aitken Memorial fountain.
The fund comes to late to save Napier House however which is set to be demolished and Elderpark Primary School, which is also to be bulldozed.
