Stornoway school wins approval
April 22 2009
Outline approval for the largest project ever undertaken by Western Isles council on Stornoway, the Isle of Lewis has been granted despite warnings that the site lies on the edge of the safety zone around the town’s gas works. The £55m secondary school from 3DReid will replace the Nicolson Institute whilst retaining the Matheson Hall, Pentland Building and Clock Tower, the last remaining vestiges of the original school.
Construction is scheduled to start in May 2010 for completion in time for the start of the new term in August 2012. The decision may yet be called in by Scottish ministers for a public inquiry however.
New schools are also planned at Tarbert, Point, Balivanich and the Westside as part of the Western Isles Schools Project.
